Short Stories

Short stories are over 1,000 words, but under about 20,000. These two were inspired by different things.

Drive was an additional story I’d written during a collaboration for an anthology. There were about 40 authors from around the world and we were given a random song from our organizer’s playlist. My first song was “Come Undone” by Duran Duran. The story that spawned from that can be found in the anthology, Words to Music (proceeds donated to charity–can you imagine splitting royalties to 40 authors in 12 countries??). However, there were some of us that wanted another song, and when I got “Only the Good Die Young” by Billy Joel, I was inspired to write Drive.

The Nutcracker’s Legacy was actually inspired by the first time I saw The Nutcracker ballet in Atlanta a few years ago. Everything about it fascinated me, and I started looking up all the translations and versions, from the ballet to the original story. When I read the version that talked about the prince not being able to break the spell, the idea for a continuation came to me. What if the prince and Clara fell in love, but he could only be real in our world for one night a year? And what if…well, I’ll let you read the story to find out what I imagined would happen next.
